How much of the frame the apps actually take

Open the editor on a desktop and a 9:16 frame looks like yours to fill. Open the same clip in TikTok, Reels or Shorts and it isn’t — each app draws its own interface directly on top of the video, and between the status bar, the caption line, the username and a column of action buttons, something close to a third of the picture belongs to the platform, not to you. Nobody designs around that on the first upload, because nothing in a normal editor shows it. This tool exists to put that interface back on the screen before the clip goes out, not after.

Where a burned-in caption actually belongs

The instinct is to put captions near the bottom of the frame, because that’s where captions sit on a horizontal timeline and on television. On a vertical platform the bottom fifth of the screen is exactly where the app puts its own caption and username line, so a burned-in caption placed there doesn’t compete with the interface — it sits underneath it and disappears. It is the single most common way a church clip ships technically finished and practically unreadable. The safer band sits closer to the middle of the frame, high enough to clear the action-button column and low enough to stay off the speaker’s face, which is what the dashed guide above marks.

Why this is a guide, not a spec

The zones drawn here are measured from real builds of each app at the time this page was written — they are not published anywhere by TikTok, Meta or YouTube, and all three move their interface between versions without announcing it. Reels and TikTok both take a tall column up the right side; Shorts is lighter on the right and heavier at the bottom. Treat the numbers as a working starting point for where to keep faces and text, not as a guarantee for every phone running every app version.

A worked example, in pixels

A standard vertical export is 1080 by 1920 pixels, the resolution every one of these platforms expects. As a rough, approximate guide: treat roughly the bottom 20% of that frame — the lowest 384 pixels or so — as claimed by the caption line and username on most apps, and roughly the top 8 to 10% (about 150 to 190 pixels) as claimed by the status bar and, on TikTok, the following/for-you tabs. That leaves the vertical middle, roughly the center 60 to 65% of the frame’s height, as the band most likely to stay clear on all three apps at once. A face or a caption placed inside that middle band is the safest single bet if you cannot check every platform individually; a caption placed in the bottom 15% is close to a coin flip on whether it survives contact with the real interface.

Safe zones and clip length work together

A safe zone is about where things sit in the frame; clip length is about how long a viewer watches at all, and the two compound each other. A caption that sits in the dead zone for the first two seconds of a clip is a caption most viewers never read, because the platform’s own UI often takes a moment to settle and a scroll-past decision happens fast. Keeping the opening frame’s text and face inside the safe band matters disproportionately more than getting it right in the middle of a 45-second clip, simply because more people see the opening frame than see the last one.

What this tool cannot do

It draws an overlay on a still frame or an image you provide; it does not touch a video file, burn anything in, or change how your clip is framed. It cannot tell you whether a specific viewer’s phone, operating system or accessibility settings shift the interface further than the measurements here account for — larger system text and certain accessibility modes can push platform UI into more of the frame than the default. And because every platform ships updates without announcing pixel-level interface changes, a safe zone that was accurate the week this page was written can drift over months. Recheck against a real post if a launch matters enough to be wrong about.

Why safe zones exist at all

None of this is arbitrary on the platforms’ part. A short-form feed is built for one-handed scrolling with a thumb, which is why the like, comment and share controls sit in a column reachable by a thumb resting on the right edge of the screen, and why the caption and username sit low enough to read without the eye traveling far from the controls. The layout is optimized for the app’s interaction model, not for whatever video happens to be playing underneath it. Every creator posting into that feed is fighting the same fixed geography, which is exactly why a tool that shows the geography in advance saves a reshoot.

Checking the real thing before a big post

For anything you can’t afford to get wrong — a launch clip, a paid promotion, a video going out under a public account you don’t control — the last step is still to post it (or use each platform’s draft/preview mode where available) and look at it on an actual phone, in the actual app. This checker gets you most of the way in seconds without exporting anything; a real preview catches whatever changed since this page measured it.

What is a safe zone in vertical video?
